Building the Network Foundation for Students to Connect-Share-Communicate at a New Charter School


The Chicago Collegiate Charter School (CCCS) is a public charter school residing in the Roseland community on Chicago’s south side. CCCS opened its doors in August 2013 with a modernized technology infrastructure built to support digital learning and teaching.

Overview of the Network Solution


CCCS contracted CSC Technology Services (CSC) to implement an end-toend high-speed networking solution for students and staff to Connect- Share-Communicate.

CSC partner, Gibson Electric, installed the structured cabling system comprised of CAT-6 cabling and 6-strand fiber for the network backbone.

The data network is built on the Cisco Unified Network and Mobility platforms. Catalyst 3750-X and 3560-X Series Switches offer backbone connectivity speed of up to 1-Gbps. Catalyst 3750-X PoE switches were deployed at MDF and 3560-X PoE switches were installed at the access layer level for access points (APs), classrooms, IDFs and labs to connect.

The wireless LAN employs 16 Cisco Aironet 2602i controller-based wireless APs for anytime, anywhere access throughout the campus. Users connect at speeds of up to 450-Mbps. Managing the wireless system is the Cisco 5508 WLAN Controller.

CCCS also invested in the Cisco ASA 5520 Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) to safeguard the CCCS network against threats of outside intrusion.

In addition to the Cisco network, the CCCS server environment is built on the HP ProLiant Server platform with Microsoft Windows Server 2012. These servers facilitate delivery of file, print and application sharing. Key services including Microsoft AD, DNS and DHCP are also configured.

Results

The CCCS network was completed and fully functional with four key systems in place for student and teacher use: 1) Cisco Data Network; 2) Cisco Wireless Network; 3) Structured Cabling System; and 4) Microsoft Client-Server Network.
